Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects dogs, especially puppies. It primarily attacks the gastrointestinal system.
What is Parvo?
Look out for symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), lethargy, loss of appetite, and fever. These can be signs of Parvo.
Symptoms
Parvo is easily spread from one dog to another through contact with infected feces, contaminated surfaces, or even by contact with an infected dog.
Highly Contagious
One of the most effective ways to prevent Parvo is through vaccination. Puppies should receive a series of vaccinations starting at 6-8 weeks of age.
Prevention
If you suspect your dog has Parvo, isolate them from other dogs to prevent the virus from spreading.
Spread
There's no cure for Parvo, but supportive care. This includes IV fluids, antibiotics to prevent secondary infections, & medications to control vomiting & diarrhea.
Treatment
Parvo can be deadly, especially in young puppies, but with prompt and appropriate treatment, many dogs can survive and go on to live healthy lives.
Is It Deadly?
Thoroughly clean and disinfect your home and any areas where your infected dog has been, as the virus can survive in the environment for months.
